Harry “Papa” Edwards

His chair may be empty but his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of all of the people whose lives he touched. Mr. Harry Akin “Papa” Edwards (age 96) was known to the people of Spring Hill, (and those passing through) by his friendly smile and waving hand as he sat in his rocker on the front porch and greeted everyone passing by his home on Main Street. “ I never knew anyone that didn’t like him and he will be missed,” said local resident, Tommy Dudley, and those same sentiments were shown as people waited in long lnes to say goodbye. Harry passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at his home. He served in the United States Army during World War II in France. He was a 61 year member of American Legion Post 10. Harry was a farmer, construction worker and retired from the maintenance department of David Lipscomb University in 1982. Longtime member of Spring Hill Church of Christ where he served as an elder. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather and friend. His family thanks everyone for making his days so special. Preceded in death by his parents, Lucius Hendley & Hattie Huggins Edwards; infant son, James Randall Edwards; grandsons, Philip Daniel “Danny” Bennett & Jason Paul Edwards; brothers, Mack William, Lucius Hendley Jr. & J.T. Edwards. Survived by wife of 67 years, Christine Edwards of Spring Hill, TN; sons, Harry A. Jr. (Ann) & William H. (Paula) Edwards of Spring Hill, TN & Paul (Nancy) Edwards of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Linda C. (Charles) Morton of Hampshire, TN & Diane E. (Phil) Bennett of Spring Hill, TN; 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren & 2 great great grandchildren; special friends, Brian & Lorraine Jones of Canada; many nieces, nephews and friends. Services were held 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Home, with Delton Porter, Glen Alexander and Phillip Wright officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post 19. Active pallbearers were David, Hendley, Johnny & John David Edwards, Jimmy Anderson, James Paul Gary, Dwayne Bradley & Dodd Church. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Rand Hayes, Dr. Nathan Lafferty & Staff, Jack Robertson, Tommy Dudley, Larry Fox, Ben Gary, Seldon Goldman, Clarence Lindsey, Tommy Farris, Tommy Hogue, John Primm, Ray Woods, Walter Matlock and special friends at the Spring Hill Church of Christ. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, 410 Allied Drive, Nashville TN 37211-9902 or The Brogan & Ruthie Edwards Educational Fund, c/o Diane Bennett, P.O.
