Jean’s Corner

The St. Catherine’s Catholic Church senior monthly luncheon was held Tuesday, June10th and 68 were in attendances. The theme was “Going to Hawaii via the Social Hall.” Well, what can I say about this luncheon but spectacular and lots of fun. Our set Director Kevin Thompson did it again, he worked miracles.

Kevin had a tan umbrella with a top that looked like a thatch roof, furnish by Candice Barton. He had two lawn chairs under the umbrella and placed a large picture of a beach and palm tree with the ocean on the wall behind, so when you sat in chairs it looked like the ocean and beach was right behind you. Kevin had a camera on a tripod and everyone had there pictures made.

As the seniors came in they were greeted by Joanie Casemen and Drew Sparkman with Leis.

Thanks to Sue Waltrip for all her hard work and helping with the center pieces. I hope she was not aching too much when she went home, not from helping me, from shaking and dancing in the hula contest.

A film of Hawaii was on a big-screened television with music in the background. The other wall had fish nets and lobsters with sea shells on it and the greenery looked like seaweed.

The seniors were welcome by our commentator, Candice Barton, wearing her grass skirt. Father Davis was greeting everyone and had his picture taken also.

We were very proud to have Father Nicholas Allen, who was ordained Friday, May 30, 2008 at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville by Bishop David Choby, to give the invocation.

As special guests, and very honored to have, Martin and Laura Hussey from Lahaina on the Island of Maui. The Hesseys treated us to a favorite on the Island consisting of good old USA spam, called spammusubi it was spam and rice wrapped with seaweed, very tasty. Then Martin and Laura had a question and answer session. Laura and family are visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ferriby of Columbia.

We had entertainment by Pacific Expressions, Christine Hendrickson and her son Baldwin and daughter Jenine, danced for us showing the custom of Hawaii, and they were excellent. This was furnished by Kevin Thompson. (Great job Kevin).

Thanks to Betty Stanfill of Caldwell Travel, 33 Public Square, Columbia for the nice display.

The men’s Hula contest was wild; I did not know seniors could shake so much. The contest was won by James Vanderhorst.

The ladies hula contest was won by Kathleen Coppings (for a few minutes Kathleen thought she was 20 again).

As always, Ricci Bukins outdid herself with the food using cute little umbrellas in the parfait dessert. The skewer veggies were a treat for us.

The winner of the ten dollar door prize was Marty Baker.

The Fishers tried there hand at calling bingo and Jean and Gray did well especially with a good sense of humor. I was so pleased with how much fun and laughter there was as we are celebrating one year of luncheons with a theme.

Remember, smile and the world smiles with you.
